Beyond-bourgeoning pop star Rina Sawayama’s first-ever Philadelphia headlining show has already undergone more updates and upgrades than she has proper releases…  The Japan-born, London-based songstress originally sold out The Foundry’s 450-capacity almost instantly, and quickly did the same with the 1,000-capacity upgrade to Theatre of Living Arts.  However, two-plus years after the date originally went on sale in January of 2020, The Dynasty Tour once again got promoted to the 2,500-capacity Fillmore Philly for May 7th and, as we speak, there are still currently tickets available for face value…  (I’d suggest snagging them ASAP.)

Rina Sawayama is touring behind her debut LP, Sawayama, which dropped in April of 2020 and followed-up her debut EP, 2017’s RinaPitchfork has proclaimed that the singer, “Captures arena heroics in these arenaless times,” while VICE said, “there hasn’t been a pop star like Rina Sawayama in quite some time.”  Elton John even went on to call Sawayama, “The strongest album of the year by far,” before going on to record a rendition of single “Chosen Family” (an homage to Sawayama’s LGBTQ+ family) with the artist for Zane Lowe’s BEATS radio show last year.  2021 also saw Sawayama put on one of NPR’s most noteworthy “Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts.”

Just this Saturday Rina Sawayama put on an epic 11-song afternoon set at Coachella, which embodied the artist’s love of pop, R&B, electronic music, and even hard rock, not just sonically, but in their best live forms, and the crowd was there for it.  It’s looking like the next time Rina Sawayama makes a stop in town it could very likely be from the stage of the Wells Fargo Center or Waterfront Music Pavilion, so it’s highly recommendable to get your tickets to see her at The Fillmore while you can (A ticket link is below.)  In the meantime, check out her rendition of “Chosen Family” with Elton John, in addition to her performance of “XS” at the BandLab NME Awards.
