The last time The Dresden Dolls played the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection was December of 2007, when they appeared at Theatre of Living Arts. At the time, Lou and Bowie were still with us, the South Street landmark was known as “The Fillmore at the TLA,” and University of the Arts was still operating. However, when the punk cabaret duo — comprised of drummer Brian Viglione and singer/songwriter/pianist Amanda Palmer — take the stage of Union Transfer after the end of the working day this Friday, 6/7 (for the first of two back-to-back nights at the Eraserhood club), all of those things will have past…
When we last saw The Dresden Dolls, they were touring their sophomore LP, Yes, Virginia…, which dropped April of 2006 on Roadrunner. 2008 saw the release of follow-up No, Virginia…, comprised of leftovers from their previous sessions, B-sides, and rarities. Later that year, the band went on an amicable indefinite hiatus. In the time since, they’ve had a handful of brief reunions, before announcing that they had new music in the works in 2019 (which was inevitably put on hold due to the pandemic). However, since 2022, they have played several short runs of shows, including 2024 dates in Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, and Nashville. While Saturday (6/8) at Union Transfer is sold-out, there are still limited tickets remaining for Friday, June 7th.
For their recent dates, The Dresden Dolls have been performing two-and-a-half-hour (support-free) shows featuring 20 or more songs from across all three of their full-lengths, in addition to covers and half a dozen new, unreleased tracks. Take this last chance to get your tickets for the band’s performance at Union Transfer this Friday, June 7th, and check out performances of Yes, Virginia…’s “Sex Changes” and “Backstabber” from the band’s 2023 three-night stand at Colony in Woodstock, NY.
