Philly Bikers Beware: Red Lights Are For You Too?

This new PSA for bikers in New York City is meant to help promote Biking Rules, which is, and I quote: “A new Street Code for NYC cyclists, following the simple principle that our responsibility to others on the street increases in relation to our potential to cause harm.” Hhhmmm…

Really? Red lights are meant to stop cars. Not bikes. Not pedestrians… I couldn’t break someone’s leg if I hit them with my bike. And neither could a pedestrian. But a car could. Trust me.

Not that you shouldn’t stop at a red light or stop sign when there is traffic. But when there are no cars coming, you can, and should be able to go. I mean seriously, right? Where my bikers at?! Stopping at every red light and stop sign when there is no traffic is not what makes you a safe biker, and would probably just make you mad tired and irritated. General awareness and caution are the propelling qualities of the safe biker. Let’s stop promoting these useless “responsibilities”.

What do you all think?…
