This Sunday, June 5th, the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection will have its live debut of two of 2022’s best releases when bedroom pop stars mxmtoon and Chloe Moriondo play Theatre of Living Arts.  Headlining the evening is mxmtoon, who’s touring behind her second studio album, rising, which was released last month.  And handling support duties is Chloe Moriondo, whose canine-themed, 5-song EP puppy love dropped in April.

rising sees 21-year-old mxmtoon (real name Maia) not only transitioning from youth to adulthood, but also someone emerging from the designation of bedroom pop into a complex, nuanced, and often-glittering indie-pop star (although she did write many of the songs from the guest bedroom/makeshift studio of her parent’s home during lockdown).  The album boasts songs that have been characterized as “disco-pop” and “electrofunk” juxtaposed with more pensive moments in which the singer/songwriter reflects upon things like the recent loss of her grandfather to leukemia and the burden of being thrust into the spotlight when you’re still basically a child.  Maia has said that the songs are those that she wished had been there for her when she was growing up.  MTV said of recent single “Victim of Nostalgia,” “It sounds like the perfect coming-of-age film theme, though songs of soundtracks past have never cut quite so deep.”

19-year-old indie popper Chloe Moriondo is actually becoming somewhat of a regular in the 215, playing two sold-out shows at The Fillmore last Fall, the first of which had them supporting kawaii rapper Ashnikko in the main room, before playing their own headlining show at The Foundry.  And, having experienced both shows firsthand, I can say that the singer/songwriter is more than adept at playing both the admirably perceptive tortured teen poet and the fledgling rock star.  New York Times proclaimed them to be, “A pop-punk whiz, deftly hopping between musical approaches from spare to lushly produced, and emphasizing intimate, cut-to-the-bone lyrics.”
