This August, Canadian composer and musician Caribou performed a free pop-up DJ set at our very own Bok Bar Rooftop, prior to the October release of his Honey LP (via Merge Records and City Slang) and his subsequent headlining tour, which kicked off earlier this month and will find the electronic musician returning to Union Transfer this Wednesday, November 20th. However, we’re even more excited about the opening set from emerging multi-disciplinary artist yunè pinku (who’s already remixed heavyweights like Charli xcx, Disclosure, and Hot Chip, who she’s also collaborated with), who’s providing support for the American jaunt, marking her return to this side of the pond, after making her US live debuts last summer with shows in New York and LA, in addition to a number of noteworthy festivals.
Last month yunè pinku released the six-song Scarlet Lamb EP courtesy of Method 808. Although the earliest music of the Irish singer/songwriter/producer – which began with 2021 debut single “Laylo,” followed by 2022 EP Bluff — is rooted in UK garage, subsequent releases have seen her delving into additional subgenres of electronic music. And the songs of Scarlet Lamb have her taking lyrical inspiration from her favorite gothic fables, in addition to her Catholic schooling, citing the imagery of Jane Eyre, Dracula, and Frankenstein as major influences. Upon the release of the recent EP, yunè pinku explained this new territory, saying, “Scarlet Lamb is an exploratory project of innocence and guilt through a subversion of the Sacrificial Lamb fable. Most of the songs are led by some sort of grapple with senses of shame, or ecstasy. It’s a change, sonically, for me, leaning more into trip-hop and alternative electronic spaces and definitely takes a lot of inspiration from my own recent music-taste.”
yunè pinku appears on the latest single from LA-based, Canada-born electronic artist Cecile Believe (co-creator of the aptly titled “Believe,” the lead single from Scarlet Lamb), “Spark,” which dropped just last week. However, she released the latest single of her own, and second from Scarlet Lamb, this September. In a gorgeous juxtaposition, shimmery, soothing, synth-driven anthem “Half Alive” has yunè pinku exploring her own personal experiences with anxiety and depression. Check out the Official Visualizers for “Believe” and “Half Alive” above and get your tickets to see yunè pinku opening Union Transfer for Caribou this Wednesday, 11/20, below.
