In 1971 a macho former football player and one of Archie’s best friends appeared on an episode of the very popular t.v. show All In The Family. For one of the first times in America, people were presented with a gay man that was not treated as a freak, or put easily into a stereotype. One of the 50 million viewers that saw the episode was President Richard Nixon, who was so shocked by what he saw he discussed it in an Oval Office meeting with Domestic Policy Adviser John Ehrlichman, this is the actual conversation they had:

Last Sunday Milk won a couple of Oscars, I wonder what Nixon would think.
