Jon

Jon Crary is an avid music fan. Jon's roots are the late 70’s punk and the new wave scene, but his influences are early 70’s glam- Roxy Music and David Bowie. His tastes evolved in the 80’s to include his influences’ copiers – Japan, Duran Duran and New Order. He hosted a radio program where Echo and the Bunnymen and the Smiths were staples. Now, their legacy is well documented. Many people think he has great taste in music, and he actually has a good record collection. He is also a semi-musician having played the bass guitar in a French garage rock band. Now, you will see him enjoying the new music of this and the last decade…thanks to Interpol “Turn on the Bright Lights” album for which he will forever be grateful for revitalizing music for the new generation and old.
  • Album Review – Disclosure – “Settle”

Disclosure is a UK duo consisting of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence. Their debut LP “Settle” despite the talk of dub step, house, disco and other musical categories… I can say that this album is just a brilliant pop album. “Settle” is full of bright danceable euro-synth pop that is...
  • Album Review – Eleanor Friedberger – “Personal Record”

Eleanor Friedberger released her sophomore LP “Personal Record” , a follow to her critically acclaimed and much heralded debut “Last Summer” in 2010. This is a tremendously ambitious follow-up to a imaginative debut record but not one that could be bested. Eleanor is the second half of the sister/...
  • Album Review: Autre Ne Veut – Anxiety

This is a heartfelt, intricate and at times a loud/downright catchy neo R&B album. This R&B trend towards something totally different and new.  This continues like no other genre evolving quickly as there are many artistic successes taking flight in this category. For example, I have grown to adore...

Broken Anchor has recorded music on...
  • Album Review – Amateur Best “No Thrills” – Double Denim Records

What do I like best about this album? It’s the voice, the retro sounding hooks and the overall delivery of this album. The voice ranges from a Bowie-like croon to a Stephin Merritt ( The Magnetic Fields) to Ed Macfarlane of Friendly Fires with a beat which is...

  • Album Review – Ex Cops – “True Hallucinations” Other Music, January 22, 2013

The great artists perfect their craft by transcending the genre they emulate. This is true for this post-dream pop band from Brooklyn, NY – Ex Cops which boasts the combination of Brian Harding and Amalie Bruun on True Hallucinations,  their creative new LP released on January 22, 2013. The...
  • Music Review: Toro Y Moi – “Anything in Return”

I always look forward to a new Toro Y Moi record, and this time I got more Toro Y Moi music in one package than any other record previously released as “Anything in Return” is 52 minutes long, but the album does not disappoint for a few reasons. It...
  • Music Review: Foxygen – “We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic”

This is a collection of retro sounds from the 60’s and 70’s but with an overall modern feel. The influences are obvious from the outset of the first song “No Destruction” pleasantly leading us on a journey through artists such as Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and The Kinks....
