Local songwriter Alex G, or (Sandy) Alex G, has been kicking out lo-fi experimental pop since about 2010, but there’s a decent chance he didn’t hit your radar until the past two years or so.  Fall of 2015 saw the release of Beach Music, courtesy of Domino Recording Company (his first non-self-released album), which garnered praise from basically all the music sources that matter, and in 2016 he found himself playing guitar on Frank Ocean’s Endless and Blonde albums.  Prior to this Alex did pretty much everything on his lonesome, but for his latest release, Rocket, which came out this May on Domino, he welcomed contributions from his touring band and several other friendly musical collaborators, providing a larger and more communal sonic aesthetic.  The album playfully, albeit schizophrenically, bounces from postmodern folk pop to IDM (seriously) to ‘90s alt rock’s take on country to post-rock, which is, honestly, just as charming as it is confusing.  Well, this Saturday, July 8th, (Sandy) Alex G will be headlining Union Transfer and we’re giving away a pair of free tickets.  If you want to go, just go to PHILTHY MAG’s Facebook page by Thursday, July 6th, at 5pm, to find out how to win.  The winner will be picked at 6pm and notified shortly after.  And while Alex G’s homecoming has been drumming up a lot of excitement on its own, immediate support comes from Michelle Zauner, AKA Japanese Breakfast, former frontwoman of Philthy punks Little Big League, whose crazy brilliant solo output is just about the best kind of experimental pop you could ever hope for.
