Hi, friends! I’m back from my well-deserved vacation and excited to be in Philly for a few really special shows this week.

8/11 The good folks at Weathervane Music are presenting a perfect lineup in Fishtown for Waterfront Wednesday. Local favorites Reading Rainbow will be joining their BFFs Eternal Summers as well as Family Trees at one of my absolute favorite spots in the city this Wednesday, Penn Treaty Park. I am always excited anytime I get to see Reading Rainbow share a bill with Eternal Summers. The two bands split 7″, Summer Reading, is my favorite split… dare I say ever? I have been listening to it regularly for a year now. If you don’t have it, get it from Chimney Sweep or e-mail me and I will personally invite you out to West Philly to hear it. Two perfect songs from two of the cutest two-pieces.

There’s actually another great FREE outdoor option on Wednesday night. Philadelphia Weekly presents Phosphorescent and GANG as part of their 20th Annual Concert in the Park Series. The highly unlikely pair will be performing at Rittenhouse Square. We here at Philthy Blog LOVE GANG (check out Conrad’s interview with the group from back in November,) so I’m hoping to make it out to both of these shows. They both start at 7pm. It’s all about time management, folks.

8/14 Chicago natives Maps & Atlases will be bringing their eclectic blend of math-rock to Kung Fu Nectkie. Supporting them will be Summer’s doo-wopiest buzzband, Cults, and Laura Stevenson and the Cans. There isn’t a spot in Philly i’d be happier to see Cults play. I’ve been singing along ever since I first heard “Go Outside” back in March or so and have recently been stalking them through Windish Agency trying to find out whatever I can, but I’ve got nothing. I wonder how long they can keep this whole secretive thing up. Anyway, you can and should download their 7″ for free over at their bandcamp. It sounds like they took my diary, translated it from bitchy banter to intelligent prose, and blended it with 1960s girl group goodness. I love it and cannot wait to hear more. [Get tickets here.]

8/15 YES! It’s time for another Making Time Pool Party. And guess what? It’s back at the Flying W Airplane Pool, site of last year’s round robin No Deachunter spectacle. I think spectacle is the only word to appropriately describe that day. Nothing will ever beat listening to Dan Deacon, No Age, and Deerhunter from a pool while gazing at rainbows… but I’m pretty excited for Deerhunter’s return this Sunday. Tickets are $15, but for $5 extra you get a round trip bus ticket to and from Philadelphia. I recommend either the $20 ticket or getting a room at the Flying Airport Resort for all you little lushes.  [Get tickets here.]
