You may have heard Remy Bond’s breakthrough bop “Summer Song” on the May edition of Philthy Radio, my monthly show on Y-Not Radio (now streaming). However, today the NYC singer/songwriter dropped another summertime jam, “Moviestar,” whose live debut will almost definitely take place in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection when the burgeoning pop icon (who’s already beloved by Elton John) kicks off The Heart Shaped Baby Tour June 1st at The Foundry at The Fillmore. Get your tickets below, check out the video for “Moviestar” (which features the artist’s sister, Olivia Bond), and read my recent chat with Remy Bond, where we discuss her latest music, Bond Girls, the famous Chelsea Hotel, and even a bit of cinema.
Izzy Cihak: You’re kicking off The Star Shaped Baby Tour right here, which I’m super excited about! What can be expected of the live show? I know you haven’t played a ton of live shows so far…
Remy Bond: You can expect to see my visual fantasy brought to life. I feel like my past shows have been just a taste of what is yet to come.
Izzy: Considering that you haven’t played a lot of live shows, are there any dates you’re especially excited about, even if it’s just to visit or revisit the city?
Remy: I’m excited to perform in all of the places I haven’t yet and to see all the Bond Girls. Now that I’ve released more songs, I can’t wait to hear the Bond Girls singing along. New York is gonna be so fun. It’s gonna be my hometown show.
Izzy: It’ll officially be summer by the time you’re here, and I actually just played “Summer Song” on the latest edition of Philthy Radio, during a block of summertime jams, so I’m curious if you have any favorite things about summer?
Remy: Thank you! Summer just feels like the time of the year we are most free. The energy is perfect. I wanted “Summer Song” to capture the spirit of that.
Izzy: Do you have any personal favorite summertime jams, other than your own?
Remy: “Goodbye Stranger” by Supertramp and “Moviestar” by myself.
Izzy: You don’t actually have a ton of music officially released and available (Like, I’m assuming around half of the live show will be songs we’re hearing for the first time.), so I’m curious if fans might be able to expect something like an EP or LP sometime in the near future?
Remy: Yes! An album is coming soon. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but it’s basically done.
Izzy: I love that you’re so into the Chelsea Hotel! And it’s amazing that you have friends that live there!
Remy: My friend Man Lai still lives there. Her house looks straight out of The Royal Tenenbaums.
Izzy: Have you read Chelsea Horror Hotel by Dee Dee Ramone? It’s a novel that came out when I was in high school (2001) and it’s like a fictionalized account of when Dee Dee lived there and him being a junkie and hanging out with the ghosts of Johnny Thunders, Sid Vicious, and Stiv Bators. It’s totally great, or at least I thought so when I was 17… You should check it out, if you haven’t already.
Remy: No, I haven’t, but that book sounds insane. I will definitely check it out.
Izzy: I know that you recently turned 20, so I’m curious if you have any advice for other young people looking to make music or get into the industry?
Remy: Do not compromise creatively. If you have a vision, stick to it.
Izzy: This is a big question, but what have been some of the highlights of your career so far?
Remy: Definitely the shows. Seeing everyone there singing along to “Summer Song” is so surreal.
Izzy: Is there anything you think is especially important for fans and potential fans to know about you, your background, your process of making music, or your aim as an artist… or is it all in the music and imagery?
Remy: I think it’s all there. As I release more music and my album, I think more of the world I am trying to bring to life will be revealed.
Izzy: I know that you’re really into Old Hollywood. And I’m a total cinephile nerd, but have to admit that I could never get into Old Hollywood, so I’m curious if you have any recommendations for where to start, both for myself and readers? Do you have like a Holy Trinity of Old Hollywood films?
Remy: Hard to pick only three. Let’s go with Sunset Boulevard, What A Way To Go, and Blue Hawaii.
Izzy: Finally, on a similar note, you obviously have an amazing sense of fashion. Is there anything you’d love to see fans wear out to the shows?
Remy: Well there are themes that I am announcing for each show date! I definitely want everyone to dress up, it takes the show to another level.
