The last time the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection saw viral-performance-artist-turned-pop-star Poppy was February of 2020, when she last appeared at Theatre of Living Arts, supporting her recently released third LP, I Disagree, which had the candy-coated cyber princess transform into a legit metal vixen (The album was even nominated for the Grammy for “Best Metal Performance.”) The evening featured a possibly-beyond-capacity crowd of black-denim-and-leather-clad gamer types fist-pumping and headbanging their way through an hour-long set of industrial-and-thrash-tinged bangers at the legendary South Street institution. And Poppy will be returning to the TLA Saturday, April 2nd, this time armed with her fourth LP, Flux, which sees her embracing the beauty of ‘90s alternative, flirting with grunge and the other kinds of sounds that could be found annually on the mainstage of Lollapalooza. Spin characterized the collection as, “nine tight, hook-focused songs that favor front-to-back consistency over constant mayhem — drawing on stoner-metal (‘Lessen the Damage’), pop-punk (‘Mean’), new wave (‘Hysteria’) and shoegaze-y dream-pop (‘As Strange As It Seems’) in satisfying bursts.” Between the rabidity of Poppy fandom and the current musical tastes of retro-craving angsty youth, the show is sure to sell out, so I would highly recommend clicking the link below to get your tickets ASAP. In the meantime, check out Poppy’s video for “So Mean.”
