Shoegaze/noise rock quartet Laveda firmly cemented their status as a NYC band with the September 12th release of LP #3, Love, Darla (which dropped via Bar/None Records), an album both sonically and thematically inspired by frontwoman Ali Genevich and guitarist Jake Brooks’ 2023 move from Albany to Queens. However, the group have become regular guests in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection throughout 2025, with a May date opening Johnny Brenda’s for our phriends Sunflower Bean and a July stop double-headlining Ortlieb’s with Nightosphere. Prior to their Ortlieb’s show, I got a chance to chat with Ali and Jake about the sheer volume of influence NYC has had on Laveda’s recent music (At one point, Ali admits that it wasn’t until her official relocation that she fully understood Sonic Youth’s Sister.)
Laveda will be returning to the 215 this coming Sunday, October 19th, when they headline Nikki Lopez on South Street. I asked my new NYC phriends if they would be kind enough to make us a Halloween playlist, and they obliged! It pheatures phriends of PHILTHY Pixies, Philly’s own They Are Gutting a Body of Water, and the band that we actually think upstaged Fontaines D.C. at Underground Arts in 2022, Just Mustard. Listen to the 11-song playlist below and listen for a spooky-sounding number from Laveda themselves this Friday, October 17th, on the October/Halloween edition of Philthy Radio, 9-11pm ET on Y-Not Radio.
