Jon Crary’s Weekly Sound Off May 19-May 24:

  1. Chromeo “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)” (Atlantic) – I can’t stop listening to this cool and funky/ danceable track from this neo-funk duo from Montreal. This album “White Woman” is catchy and an 80’s vibe going on. This song is tasty and my track pick of the week!

  1. Fear of Men “Descent” (Kanine) – Having only discovered them recently as they will be live opening for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Johnny Brenda’s  in Philly on Monday night May 19. This is a happy, blissful, bright and atmospheric gem. Have a listen:

  1. Sharon Van Etten “Your Love is Killing Me” (Jagjaguwar) – Her new songs are catchy and more and more brilliant. This song is chilling, voice not unlike something from Angel Olsen, a complex atmospheric march of instrumentation. I feel her emotion shine through. Excellent song.

  1. EMA “So Blonde” (Matador)– I’m somehow transported to 90’s post-Garbage haven with this rockin’ tune from EMA. Her stellar debut “Past Life of Martyred Saints” put her on the map, but this latest LP “The Future Void” solidifies it for her. Great tune!

Jon Crary is an avid music fan. Jon's roots are the late 70’s punk and the new wave scene, but his influences are early 70’s glam- Roxy Music and David Bowie. His tastes evolved in the 80’s to include his influences’ copiers – Japan, Duran Duran and New Order. He hosted a radio program where Echo and the Bunnymen and the Smiths were staples. Now, their legacy is well documented. Many people think he has great taste in music, and he actually has a good record collection. He is also a semi-musician having played the bass guitar in a French garage rock band. Now, you will see him enjoying the new music of this and the last decade…thanks to Interpol “Turn on the Bright Lights” album for which he will forever be grateful for revitalizing music for the new generation and old.
