Although it’s fun getting to spend several nights a week seeing great young bands just on the verge of breaking, at 34, it’s almost always most exciting to get to indulge in the nostalgia of the music that raised me… And tonight, Johnny Brenda’s is hosting a double, or perhaps triple, dose of that nostalgia.  Making their very first appearance in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection is Filthy Friends, the supergroup fronted by Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck.  However, opening the show is equally nostalgic, punky power poppers, Dressy Bessy.  The Denver-based indie outfit, fronted by Tammy Ealom, are currently celebrating their 20th anniversary and the upcoming release of their seventh studio album, Fast Faster Disaster (out on June 14th, courtesy of Yep Roc).  The album would seem to be the perfect collection of summertime jams for people who rock leather jackets year-round.  And this summer they’re bringing along our good friends, Potty Mouth, for their own headlining tour.  If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket for tonight’s sold out show at Johnny Brenda’s, make sure to show up early, as they go on at 8pm sharp.  And, either way, check out their super duper cool, brand new, music video for “Fearless,” which premiered last week.

During the day Izzy Cihak teaches transgression, subversion, and revolution at Temple University. At night he haunts Philthy's best venues to cover worthwhile acts for Philthy Mag. Morrissey is everything to him and, in their own heads, all of his friends see themselves as Zooey Deschanel.
