Faye Webster Sells Out and Goes Orchestral… Separately, haha (8/20 at UT, Currently Sold Out)

Not many musicians are acclaimed for their ability to excel in both country and R&B… and even fewer (if any… ever) can claim to be world-class yo-yo-ers…  However, all of these things are true of Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Faye Webster, who grew up playing country in a family of Americana musicians, before going on to get signed to rap label Awful Records and explore the R&B for which her city is known.  Last year Webster released I Know I’m Funny haha, her fourth full-length and the arguably most solidly satisfying and eclectic mix of sounds resulting in indie pop since the golden years of Belle & Sebastian.  The album was met with widespread critical acclaim, with i-D Magazine calling it, “an amalgamation of everything Faye has learned so far, set against the backdrop of a global pandemic. It’s an exercise in honesty, in getting comfortable with being alone and in falling in love.”

Since the release of I Know I’m Funny haha, Faye Webster embarked on an almost-entirely-sold-out headlining tour (including a September stop at The Foundry), played a run of dates opening mega-venues for Haim, and dropped an EP (Car Therapy Sessions) of new and reimaged songs featuring the singer/songwriter backed by a full orchestra.  Car Therapy Sessions, released this April on Secretly Canadian, features five tracks conducted and arranged by Trey Pollard, which have Webster sounding like a Disney princess who found herself headlining Pitchfork Music Festival.

Faye Webster is currently about to wrap up a headlining tour, which will have her returning to the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection this Saturday, August 20th, at Union Transfer, where she will be joined by actor, poet, and folk musician Maya Hawke, who will be opening the show.  Although the show is currently sold out, I would highly recommend signing up for alerts below, in case tickets become available.  In the meantime, check out her recent music videos for “Suite: Jonny” [an orchestral melding of “Jonny” and “Jonny (Reprise)” from 2019’s Atlanta Millionaires Club] and the EP’s brand new track, “Car Therapy,” and read my chat with Faye about her latest LP from last Fall.
