The last time I caught up with Orange County indie poppers The Colourist, last June, they’d only recorded two songs — which they characterized for me as “Paranormal California Tropic Rock” (If that could use a bit of context, they are all “avid hunters of the paranormal.”)  Since then, they’ve toured the country with the likes of Metric and Fitz and the Tantrums, starred in a commercial for for the AT&T Nokia Lumina 1020, and recorded their debut LP, which is set to drop March 25th on Universal Republic.  The band have actually played two huge local shows in the past six months, with a stop last October opening for The Naked and Famous at the Trocadero and an appearance last month supporting Panic! At the Disco at the sold out Electric Factory.  However, they’re currently about to descend upon SXSW in the middle of a headlining tour which stops at our own North Star Bar on March 22nd for an all-ages show.  I recently got a chance to chat with The Colourist’s Adam Castilla about 2014 and everything he’s currently excited about.

“We finished the album, which was a huge thing.  This is our first full-length album coming out and I think we’re most excited to just have an album.  All this time we were just touring on an EP, so it’s nice to be able to have a tangible thing.  And I think we’re actually really looking forward to this headlining run and having our own full-set, playing most of our songs, playing the album, and we’re bringing all of our own stuff… stage props included.”

During the day Izzy Cihak teaches transgression, subversion, and revolution at Temple University. At night he haunts Philthy's best venues to cover worthwhile acts for Philthy Mag. Morrissey is everything to him and, in their own heads, all of his friends see themselves as Zooey Deschanel.
