Although I’m hearing about her for the first time this past Halloween… Apparently Grumpy Cat is a already pretty big deal… Grumpy Cat is an endearingly crabby kitty who went viral on YouTube and has, over the past two-and-a-half years, been featured on the covers of The Wall Street Journal and New York magazine; appeared on Good Morning America, American Idol, and The Bachelorette; and written two New York Times best sellers… While YouTube stars don’t tend to be my cup of tea, Grumpy Cat’s latest venture caught my interest… Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, a Lifetime original movie that premieres Saturday, November 29th, which has my favorite delightfully deadpan comedic vixen, Aubrey Plaza, voicing the famous feline in a “charming” Christmas tale… However, I’m even more delighted by the film’s official soundtrack, which dropped this Tuesday, and boasts a bevy of your favorite Christmas tunes, covered by some of pop’s most enchanting musicians.  Highlights include KT Tunstall’s loungey Americana take on “Sleigh Ride,” Pomplamoose’s ironic, anti-jingle treatment of “Up on the Housetop,” and Natalie Taylor’s soulfully Southern rendition of “Holiday Bells.”  However, the album’s greatest moment is indie pop genius’ The Bird and the Bee’s interpretation of “Carol of the Bells,” which resembles an ineffably airy brand of goth-tinged shoegaze… It may be the best audio to ever be inspired by J.C.’s big day…

During the day Izzy Cihak teaches transgression, subversion, and revolution at Temple University. At night he haunts Philthy's best venues to cover worthwhile acts for Philthy Mag. Morrissey is everything to him and, in their own heads, all of his friends see themselves as Zooey Deschanel.
