Jon Crary’s Weekly Sound Off May 5-May 12:

1. Hercules & Love Affair – “ I Try To Talk to You”- One of my favorite albums of the last quarter century was Hercules & Love Affair’s eponymous self-titled 2008 classic, and now, here is a new single which is no less interesting. It has a great beat and loungy-like lyrics, feeling like you are alone walking down a busy street looking for the next gig. This is a huge triumph. Pick of the week!

 2. Tom Vek “Sherman (Animals in the Jungle) – This is a catchy, abrasive punk-dance kinda song that you can come to expect from Tom Vek. Tom Vek’s distinctive voice and great lyrics along with a melodic noise which comes with such urgency. This is a great new track! Have a listen!

3. Pawws “Sugar” – Here is a great find from this London-based synth-pop band. They create tinkling melodies reminiscent of early ‘80’s OMD with a tiny-like female voice. It’s the sweet vocals and interesting progressions that make it sound new and relevant. Enjoy.

 4. Alvvays “Adult Diversion” – This is a great Toronto, Canada band. Really great lo-fi sounds, cheery vocals, bright guitar and generally smash them up sounds, noisy and fun. Great stuff!

5.  Leon T. Pearl “ If You’re Still There” – Here is a cool track from this UK artist. This is a club-like, beat driven, and looped vocals. It’s dreamy and highly complex electronic beats provide the best dance floor option. It’s a great workout track as well. Pulsating dance vibes and loops abound. Dance to the beat!

Jon Crary is an avid music fan. Jon's roots are the late 70’s punk and the new wave scene, but his influences are early 70’s glam- Roxy Music and David Bowie. His tastes evolved in the 80’s to include his influences’ copiers – Japan, Duran Duran and New Order. He hosted a radio program where Echo and the Bunnymen and the Smiths were staples. Now, their legacy is well documented. Many people think he has great taste in music, and he actually has a good record collection. He is also a semi-musician having played the bass guitar in a French garage rock band. Now, you will see him enjoying the new music of this and the last decade…thanks to Interpol “Turn on the Bright Lights” album for which he will forever be grateful for revitalizing music for the new generation and old.
